David Chalmers in his book the Conscious Mind, is quite positive on the possibility of artificial consciousness. Yet, in NeurIPS 2022, one of the most important technical gatherings on Artificial Intelligence, he has expressed his deep concern over the state of art in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) raising the issues on the marked inadequacies of Large Language Models viz., ChatGPT, Llama etc. It is pointed out that the current AI models largely suffer from insufficient data on real world experience and fail to relate to human existence. Liad Mudrik too, a famous neuroscientist, Tel Aviv University voices a similar concern stating that “Consciousness poses a unique challenge in our attempts to study it, because it’s hard to define.”
Interestingly, the scholars of Abhidhamma appear to be quite familiar with the topics on consciousness and mind with focus on cognitive process of the objects in the world and their relationships with other objects and thoughts. In light of the above, I believe that the present book by Chandra B Varma shall be welcomed by researchers working in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Also, I congratulate the author in his sincere endeavour to bridge the gap between the traditional scholars and the modern scientists and academia. I hope, the book shall give a sound base to the advancement of Artificial Intelligence studies using the Abhidhammic concepts.
