Abhidhammatthasaṅgaha-Sarūpa: Text and Translation has been a pioneering work by Chandra B Varma, a Scholar at Australian National University (187-91). The work was submitted for examination by three internationally recognised experts including Prof Nathmal Tatia (Harvard, Nalanda and Ladnun) and was recommended for the award of D.Litt Degree in Pali.

The work is original and  ‘pioneering’ for bringing out the edition and translation of the Pali ms no. 353 of Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. This is noteworthy that the work in question is wrongly deciphered in the colophon of the Catalogue Sommaire des Manuscrites Sanscrits el Pālis of Bibliotheque National Paris (ed. A.Cabaton 1907).

This work is highly valuable for every scholar interested in manuscriptology or editing and translation of any Sanskrit, Pali or Prakrit texts.

Description

The book is pioneering and original as it evolves a model for a reliable edition and translation of any classical text for its accessibility to a modern scholar…”

                – Professor Nathmal Tatia, Harvard, Jain Vishwa Bharati & Nalanda.

“The author has brought out an acceptable edition and a translation of a hitherto unpublished and untranslated Abhidhammic commentary. His work could, therefore, be evaluated as an original contribution to the study of the Theravada Abhidhamma”. – David Kalupahana, University of Hawaii, USA

“I would like to say that the work involved in this project and the manner in which Chandra B. Varma has conducted the research deserves to he recognised. It makes a significant contribution to the study of Theravada tradition in South and, S-East Asia.” –Y. Karunadasa, Director. Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Colombo, Sri Lanka

“I am very glad to read a detailed and precise study of a Pali manuscript. The author has taken a lot of pains. There are so many manuscripts, which deserve same kind of philological service.” –Professor Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat, Paris, France

“[The author’s methodologies] conform to high editing standards. … Also, [when translating] Varma has tried to strike a balance between extreme literalness and extreme looseness without overlooking the original grammatical constructions, original meaning and purport of the text by evolving his guiding principle and criteria of intelligibility, comprehensibility and above all, readability; and thereby produces a piece of translation, which is useful both for a traditional as well as a modern reader.”

Professor Scholastica Kujur, Indian Literature, Vol.200 Nov-Dec 2000 Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi; pp.168-69

“Chandra B. Varma unlocks secret of a rare post 11th century Pali manuscript in Cambodian script held in Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris by deciphering ….”

                                – Australian National University Reporter, Aug 11, 1989
